Buna River – the hidden diamond below the cliff.
Let’s go and swim a little bit.
Did you know that the source of the Buna is one of the largest and most beautiful in Europe?!
This is the finest example of an underground karst river. The underground river flows out of a 200 meter cliff wall and forms the Buna River. There is no surprise that the Ottoman sultan was impressed, and ordered a tekke (tekija – Dervish monastery) to be built right next to it.
This house/monastery from 16th century was built for the Dervish cults and is still one of the most mystical places in all of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is open to visitors all year round and you can enjoy cold drinks, tea and tTurkish coffee in a beautiful garden overlooking the mouth of the Buna River.
Meanwhile Blagaj is a nearby village-town (kasaba) in the south-eastern region of the Mostar basin, in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Above the village towers the old Blagaj fort (Stjepan grad) which is the birthplace of Bosnian queen Katarina Kosača-Kotromanić. Unlike other fortifications serving as residences in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Blagaj fortress is located on a natural level area above steep cliffs to the south, west and north. The walls have survived for much of their length to a height of 12 or 14 m. The interior defended area is relatively small, similar to that of the fortress in Jajce.
